Volvo XC60 Overview

The first customer unit of the XC60 midsize SUV was rolled out of the production lines from Volvo’s Torslanda plant in Sweden a few weeks ago. It was a T5 Inscription AWD model painted in crystal white colour scheme. The new-gen XC60 has a mountain to climb as it succeeds the bestselling mid-sized luxury in Europe.

Yes, the XC60 through its lifespan endured massive global sales of nearly one million units and contributed to almost one-third of the entire Volvo sales worldwide. It is the fourth vehicle underpinned by the in-house developed and flexible SPA vehicle architecture. Under the bonnet, the said model boasted the award-winning T8 twin-engine petrol connected to electric motor in the range-topping model. The plug-in hybrid unit produces a combined power output of 407 horsepower while capable of accelerating from zero to 100 kmph in just 5.3 seconds. Check Volvo XC60 price in Hyderabad at Autozhop.

The much-awaited new generation 60 series Volvo SUV made its global debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in September. The 2018 Volvo XC60 replaces the existing model which has been in business since 2008 in foreign markets and it has recently been launched in India. Here is everything you need to know about the all-new XC60

Volvo XC60 Exterior & Look

Not much can be noticed about the exterior design. The test mules seem to be wearing thick camouflage. This makes it difficult to understand what is underneath the skin. The Thor hammer inspired LED headlamps will come on the XC60. Then, there will be the oblong grille that is a combination through out the Volvo range. We reckon, the design will be a lot more sporty and aggressive.

There isn’t a major change in the dimensions as it is expected to continue with a similar length 4,628 (182.2 in) on the new-gen too.Volvo is looking at adding a long wheelbase for better interior room.To know more info on Volvo XC60 check Kmindia

Volvo XC60 Interior & Space

The interior of 2018 Volvo XC60 has received several updates as well. It comes sporting similar design like the bigger sibling XC90. This means, the new XC60 arrives more premium looks while emphasizing on luxury and comfort for the occupants. It receives a new touchscreen infotainment system and new fully digital instrument cluster. Seat and upholstery materials also come with greater Scandinavian quality.

Volvo Cars have introduced three new advanced driver assistance features in the new XC60. They are designed to provide the driver with automatic steering assistance or support when needed to help avoid potential crashes. Volvo said the new features will make the XC60 one of the safest cars currently and rightly so as it exceeded expectations and scored more rating than any other car ever tested by Euro NCAP recently.

Volvo has been working with collision avoidance systems for many years and claims that in Sweden alone a decline of around 45 per cent rear-end frontal crashes have been witnessed courtesy of the collision warning with auto-braking system. City Safety has been updated to accommodate steering support in the new XC60 and it engages when automatic braking cannot avoid a potential collision between speeds of 50-100 kmph.

The Oncoming Lane Mitigation also helps avoiding accident with vehicles in an oncoming lane. It alerts a driver who wandered out of driving lane by providing automatic steering assistance and guiding them back into their own lane and out of the path of any oncoming vehicle in speeds between 60-140 kmph. It also gets a new CleanZone four-zone climate system that removes harmful pollutants and particles from outside the cabin.

The optional Blind Spot Information System alerts drivers to the presence of vehicles in blind spot and it has also received an update to include steer assist functionality. Large Animal Detection, Run-off Road Mitigation and the semi-autonomous driver support and convenience system Pilot Assist are the other optional safety technologies made available in the new XC60.

The new Volvo XC60 is sold in three different trim levels namely Momentum, R-Design and Inscription. However, India gets the top-of-the-range Inscription model only with a packed features list. Some of the highlighting equipment are LED headlamps with Thor Hammer Daytime Running Lights, nine-inch Sensus Connect touchscreen infotainment system, Bowers & Wilkins 224 watt 10-speaker audio system and 19-inch five-double spoke matte black diamond cut alloy wheels.Other important features include Nappa leather upholstery, 12-inch driver display, dual exhaust pipes, Collision Mitigation Support, Lane Keeping Aid and other radar based safety assistance systems.

Volvo XC60 Engine & Transmission

Propelling this luxury SUV is the same 1969cc, 4-cylinder, diesel engine which is tuned to produce 235 horses and a massive 480 Nm of twist which is 10 HP and 60 Nm more than the XC90!. Paired to an 8-speed gearbox, the engine is gets a bit vocal when you fire up the car but settles down nicely. At low RPMs, there’s hardly any engine noise inside the cabin but you can hear a thrum as the revs increase which isn’t very bothersome. While driving in the city, the XC60 feels very eager and responsive and the gearbox has a tendency to upshift quickly.

As you get going on the highways, the XC60 surprises you with its grunty performance. It never really feels short on power and torque and performance is very tractable. The low-end and mid-range have enough juice and the engine feels comfortable doing speeds well above the ton too. 100 km/hr comes up in 4th gear at 3500 RPM and if you’re cruising, you can do the same speed in 8th gear at 1500 RPM. 0-100 km/hr comes up in a claimed 7.2 seconds while top speed is 220 km/hr.

The 8-speed gearbox works well when you’re driving sedately but if you stomp the throttle, it is hard to not notice the small delay it takes to downshift and gather pace. The gearbox misses put on a Sport mode though you do get a manual mode and also paddle-shifters. For driving modes, you get Eco, City and Dynamic which alter steering and suspension characteristics along with engine response. While we couldn’t really test the fuel efficiency, you can expect around 12 km/l in a mixed driving cycle.Apply car loan for Volvo XC60.

Volvo XC60 Driving Dynamics

The Volvo XC60 feels very stable no matter what type of road you’re driving it on. It never feels out of composure and instils a lot of confidence in the driver. The steering is fairly light at low speeds and weighs up very well. The suspension is tuned to provide a comfortable ride to passengers and the large tyres also do a good job of absorbing bumps. The XC60 comes with specially-designed Michelin tyres and the compound of these tyres is made specially for Volvo and the sidewalls even have an exclusive engraving.

In Comfort mode, the XC60 feels very relaxed to drive with the steering not feeling very heavy and the suspension having a softer setup. Body roll is a bit noticeable in this mode. When you shift to Dynamic mode, the steering feels way more heavier, the suspension gets firmer and the car overall feels so much more agile and tighter with reduced body roll too. You also get an Off-Road mode which increases the ride height of the car by 1.5-inches allowing it to pass over off-road terrain without scraping the underbelly.

Volvo XC60 Safety & Security

Known for its safety, Volvo’s XC60 has ventilated disk brakes for both the front as well as rear wheels and no compromises when it comes to installation of airbags, you get safety airbags for every passenger. While the automatic height adjustable seat belts and the intelligent driver information system are one of the highlights of Volvo XC60 Braking and Safety features.

Volvo XC60 Verdict

Volvo is an underdog in the Indian luxury 4-wheeler market. The company makes such brilliant pieces of engineering that it is a bit unfortunate that Indian buyers are only obsessed with German offerings in these segments. While nothing in this world is perfect, there are some things which are close to perfection. The 2018 Volvo XC60 is one of those cars which is hard to fault and the only thing which loses brownie points is the limited leg-space at the rear. If you want a powerful luxury SUV that isn’t too large in size but offers good driving pleasure, intricate details and mind-numbing features, the Volvo XC60 is definitely the one to go for.
