Nissan Terrano Overview

The Nissan Terrano is the third model in the Renault-Nissan India line-up to receive the badge-engineering treatment. However, this time, it’s Nissan that is tweaking a Renault product rather than the other way around. Unlike the other two badge-engineered models in the Renault-Nissan stable – the Scala and the Pulse – both of which have got mild tweaks to their exteriors to differentiate them from their Nissan equivalents; Nissan has gone a step further with the Terrano and made significant styling changes, including heavy alterations to the sheet metal. These include redesigned bumpers and lights and a new grille, all of which help the Nissan Terrano look like a proper Nissan. And there’s no doubt that the company has got a winner in the looks department. The Nissan Terrano’s revised V-shaped bonnet integrates nicely with the new Nissan-family grille. The grille itself looks inspired by the larger Nissan Pathfinder SUV sold internationally. The front bumper and lights are new, and the detailed styling around the fog lamps gives the Nissan Terrano a striking look when viewed head on. Nissan Terrano Exteriors

Dimensionally, Nissan Terrano measures 4.33m in length with a width of 1.83m. Its overall height with the fixed roof rail is 1.67m. The wheelbase of 2.67m adds more to the interior spacing which is already abundant given its incredible height. Nissan Terrano has a ground clearance of 205mm, which is similar to that of Renault Duster, but is an add-on advantage that will keep this SUV going easily on any terrain.

The side profile of Nissan Terrano has angular bold lines which are different from Duster’s curvy lines. The flared wheel-arches make the Terrano look aggressive, distinguishing it from most of Nissan’s models in India. The doors have two horizontal creases in them that enhance the butch look, but it isn’t enough to alleviate the organic lines of the rest of the car. The rear end bears no similarity to any of the Nissan SUVs and it is evident that Nissan has developed a new tail lamp cluster without fiddling too much with the Duster lamps. It gets a chrome garnish to add a premium feel, but the overall appearance is rugged with roof rails and silver skid plates. The flared up wheel arches of this SUV are endowed with a set of diamond-cut 16” machined light -weight alloy wheels in the top end variants, while the base as well as the mid variants are fitted with similar sized robust steel wheels, which certainly make the SUV look sportier. These classy rims have been further equipped with tubeless radial tyres of size 215/65 R16, which have a superior road grip on any terrain.

Nissan Terrano Interiors

The cabin of the Terrano attempts a somewhat similar freshening up just like the redesigned exterior. But, the extent of change inside the Terrano is much lower than the outside. However, Nissan engineers have managed to still lift up the overall premiumness of the cabin, though this might be more evident in the top-trim variants. There is a slight variation in the interior colour theme, though the dashboard layout and major elements are mostly carry-forwards. There are a few changes such as the flip open storage box at the top of the centre stack. The combination of circular and rectangular aircon vents and the piano-black finish for the centre stack caught my attention in my test mule.

Faux wood door handles and the chrome bits all around the cabin are other elements that help boost the feeling of quality inside the Terrano. The rear aircon vents positioned between the two front seats (also found in the Duster) will be a blessing during the forthcoming summer. Nissan Terrano Transmission

The Nissan Terrano comes with a 1.6 litre petrol engine and a 1.5 litre diesel engine. The diesel engine comes in two states of tune in which it generates 84 hp of power at 3,750 rpm and 200 Nm of torque at 1,900 rpm while in the other state of tune, it produces 109 hp of power at 3,900 rpm and 248 Nm of torque at 2,250 rpm. The petrol engine makes 103 hp of power at 5,350 rpm and 145 Nm of torque at 3,750 rpm

The Nissan Terrano comes with a six speed manual transmission for the diesel engine that has 109 hp of power while the petrol engine and the lower state of tune diesel engine is offered with a 5 speed gearbox. The Nissan Terrano diesel is also available in an AMT.In terms of safety, the Nissan Terrano is offered with Anti lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), dual front airbags, speed sensing automatic door locks and hazard warning switch.The Nissan Terrano has an ARAI claimed fuel efficiency of 13.2 kmpl for the petrol variants and 19 kmpl for diesel variant which is acceptable for its segment.

Nissan Terrano Driving

The Nissan Terrano is not a hard core SUV but instead an off roader. Don’t let that fool you as this vehicle can take a good amount of off roading bruise. We did manage to make it climb places and go on terrains which only an SUV is capable of. The suspension setup of Mcpherson struts for front and torsion beam axle at the rear works in tandem in keeping the vehicle afloat on hard roads.

Maneuvering the Terrano is very easy as it has a turn radius of 5.2m. The Terrano feels very light when it comes to steering it out of tight corners. There are occasions especially at high speeds and on rough patches where the steering feedback is too aggressive. In addition to this the bolstering on the steering wheel is also not sufficient.There is minimal body lag owing to its height. Reaching triple digit speeds is not a task at all in this. However, even this one feels a bit stressed when fully loaded but then the gear shifts in this are less. The 6 speed manual transmission does a fair job to this engine as in the other two it is missed greatly. The shift quality is decent. The only aspect where it didn’t score is in its braking which is very poor.

Nissan Terrano Safety

We loved the Duster for its braking performance and the Terrano with the same Disc/drum setup performs very well. The car came to a halt from 100kmph in a short 40.24m which is just a little shorter than the Duster. The Terrano shows the same confidence shedding speeds in a straight line without any squirming at the steering wheel and with good control from the ABS.

Kit levels in the Terrano are exactly what you get in the Duster. In the safety department you get two airbags, ABS, a reverse parking sensor, and a bash guard to protect your engine when on rough terrain. The XV offers keyless entry, two 12V sockets, tilt adjustable steering and height adjustable seats. With the good comes the bad and the Terrano carries forward the Duster’s negative points as well. The seating position isn’t perfect and the driver’s seat still has the tendency to rock slightly under braking. The controls for the ORVMs still lie in that awkward position under the handbrake while the rear power windows are in the same position in the door pads and that has you accidentally opening the windows every time you rest your elbow. These are just minor niggles and none of them are a deal breaker but the fact is that they still exist

Nissan Terrano Conclussion

The Terrano is a genuinely nice car, and I do want to like it. However, it is missing some essential features that have been mentioned already. With the new Micra I thought that Nissan India had learned that the market will respond well to value – but according to the Renault-Nissan agreement, the donor car will always cost less than its twin. This means that the Duster will cost less than the Terrano, and this puts the top-spec Terrano between Rs 1-1.5 lakh over the top-spec Duster. That’s a staggering Rs 16.5-17 lakh on-road for great engineering but an incomplete feature set. The Duster filled in a gap in the Indian marketplace and it sold well as long as there weren’t options. The Terrano will enter the market with competition like the Duster itself and the Ford EcoSport. Will Nissan have a surprise in store for us like they did with the pricing of the new Micra? I certainly hope they do.
