Jeep Compass Overview
The Jeep Compass has been in news since the automaker announced its plans of introducing a vehicle built in India for specifically the Indian buyers. Well, now after a wait for over a couple of years, it is finally here. And, we are immensely delighted that FCA India – the parent company – gave it a go ahead and launched it in the Indian market. The Compass is built at the Ranjangaon production facility with around 65 percent local content. The company has presented it in three trims – Sport, Longitude and Limited – with a total of 10 variants, out which 7 are in diesel fuel trim whereas 3 are in petrol guise. The interior cabin is quite innovative with a plethora of comfort features and storage spaces. Jeep has paid utmost importance to the safety of occupants as it has incorporated as many as a dozen contemporary features. The SUV would also feature a 4X4 drive system, while also getting an automatic transmission.
Jeep Compass Look
Talk about styling, and the Compass surely won’t disappoint. The India-spec Compass SUV borrows its styling cues from the Grand Cherokee SUV. Towards the front profile, the SUV gets Jeep’s signature 7 slat grille. The headlamp unit looks sharp and gets LED daytime running lamps and projector units. The side profile looks little-squared wheel arches. The rear profile too looks sophisticated as well while the chrome lining just below the roof rail which loops around the SUV adds a premium feel to the SUV. The rear profile of the SUV looks impressive as well with the wraparound LED taillamps. The duel tone bumpers towards the front and rear give a big appearance to the SUV.
The Jeep Compass will compete with other C-SUV segment and is based on the same platform as the Jeep Renegade, however, the Compass SUV gets a longer wheelbase and certainly gets Jeep’s offroading DNA.
Jeep Compass Comfort
The interiors of the car are reminiscent to the elder sibling Grand Cherokee with similar upmarket feel. The top portion of the dashboard comes with black finishing while the lower half is finished in white. The dashboard features soft-touch plastics which does enhance the premium appeal. But increasing the premium feel, it seems the carmaker has gone overboard as the piano black surround on the 7-inch touchscreen unit doesn’t look good. The steering wheel gives a nice feel while the twin-pod instrument cluster with 3.5-inch MID screen in the middle gives relevant information of the vehicle. These include average fuel economy, instant fuel economy, distance to empty, low-fuel warning, current playing music, parking information, battery voltage level, days left for service, oil and coolant temperature and other important warning messages. One of the main highlights in the cabin is the gear lever which looks like a ball of metal finished in silver. The gear stick feels nice to hold and remains cool as it gets cold air from the ac vents. The storage area seems to be limited with small hole behind the gear lever, 2 cup holders and a deep glovebox under the sliding armrest capable of storing 500ml bottle easily. The cup holders gets small LEDs beneath which is a nice touch while the glovebox in the dashboard is average, neither bigger nor tiny.
The seats of the car are partly leather and partly white hue which looks wonderful with the contrast red stitching. There is also black hued seat available in case you are afraid that the white one would get dirty and dull. Though the matte black plastic quality especially on the door panels could have been better but they are not bad either and in terms of quality, everything seems to be robust and built to last.
Coming to the comfort and space, this is the area where this car scores well. There is excellent amount of space for the front passengers and enough knee and legroom for the back benchers. There is adequate amount of headroom and people with 6 feet and less wouldn’t feel any problem. The seatback at the rear has been fixed at a comfortable angle while the additional width of the seat squab has resulted in ample under thigh support. Though it’s a 5-seater, accommodating third person could be a little problem due to the transmission tunnel and the seat squab contour. The rear seats can be split in 60:40 ratios providing additional space for the cargo.
Being a comeback in the Indian market, it was inevitable for the company to offer a plethora of features in the car. And the American automaker has done it pretty well. The list of equipment includes a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment provided by Uconnect compatible with both Android Auto and Apply CarPlay. The infotainment unit is also integrated with voice command and Bluetooth while the screen also provides guidelines and feeds from the reverse parking camera.
Besides audio and phone functions, the display screen also features secondary controls for the climate control system. The decibels are provided by 6 speakers encompassing every square meter of the acoustics. Then there is dual-zone automatic temperature control and rear ac vents, which further create comfortable environment on the go. The list of features further include 8-way power adjustable driver seat with 4-way lumbar support and memory function, start/stop switch, auto-dimming interior mirror, automatic headlamps, rain sensing wipers and dual-pane panoramic sunroof.
The electric parking brake feature is a welcome move while another conspicuous omission includes the electric opening of the tail gate which should be there in a Rs. 20 lakh car. A separate USB port has been given for the rear passengers, a thoughtful addition. There are mounted steering controls which are a good but the blank switches on the right hand side are certainly an eyesore.
Jeep Compass Gearbox
The good thing is that the Jeep Compass SUV is offered with both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol unit will be powered by 1.4 FIRE MultiAir petrol engines which are expected to produce around 160+ Hp of peak power and 250 Nm of torque.. The diesel unit, on the other hand, gets the 2.0-litre MultiJet unit which will provide 170 Hp+ of peak power and about 350 NM of torque. The following drivetrains will be paired either to a 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Both the petrol as well as the diesel drivetrain is offered with both 2X2 as well as 4X4 wheel drive options. The Jeep’s dedicated four-wheel-drive system and also select terrain technology will also be present even in their entry level product for the Indian market which means the Jeep has shared its offroading DNA with the Compass as well. Besides all these offroading hardware the Compass will also get a differential locking system as well on the top end variant. The lower trims, on the other hand, will be offered with a two-wheel drive option.
SUVs aren’t known for excellent fuel efficiency, especially the petrol ones. Same is the case with Jeep Compass. The petrol automatic version returns around 8kmpl in cities and 12.5kmpl on highways. This is acceptable figure when we compared it to Tucson. The diesel Compass with AWD is slightly efficient with the city and highway mileage being around 11kmpl and 14kmpl respectively.
