Ford Ecosport Review & Driving Dynamics
Ford EcoSport Overview
The Ford EcoSport is based on the Titanium+ variant of the updated EcoSport range and receives just a few cosmetic tweaks and a sunroof to distinguish it from its siblings. There are mechanical changes in the petrol S too and it gets a new engine, with the 1.0 EcoBoost replacing the Indian-made Dragon series 1.5-litre unit. This is matched with a new 6-speed manual that takes the place of the 5-speed that came before it. The diesel S will also feature the same 1.5-litre diesel as before with a 5-speed manual transmission. Another addition to the EcoSport range is a new Signature edition trim package that further expands the EcoSport family. Yes, this does sound confusing so read on as we unravel all the details. Ford EcoSport Design & Look
The biggest change on the Ecosport facelift is its face. There is a large front grille that resembles the Endeavour. The front grille is big with horizontal chrome slats. The headlamps are sharp and have projector lamps and daytime running LEDs too. The front fog lamps are also larger than before. This makes it look bigger and different. It is now a part of the Ford SUV family. The side profile, remains untouched. There is a design for alloy wheels, and that’s about it. The silhouette is the same and so is the rear. The spare wheel is retained at the back and this will stay for the Indian car market. The 200mm of ground clearance too is retained.
Ford EcoSport Cabin & Comfort
Inside, it is equally sporty, with black dominating the interiors along with orange inserts on the doors and centre console; the seats get orange stitching and highlights. The instrument cluster now features chrome rings for the dials and also a new LCD MID screen, but the highlight of the interior is the all-important electric sunroof.
Infotainment-wise, you get the same 8-inch touchscreen system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Ford’s SYNC3 command system, but exclusive to the S is a tyre pressure monitoring system (this, like a few other features, was earlier available on the Titanium+ until it got a mild de-spec). Other aesthetic additions include alloy pedals which further add to the sporty visuals. The rest of the interior, though, remains the same as on the Titanium+ spec; in other words, it carries forward the part-leather seats, cruise control, ambient lighting and safety equipment such as six airbags, brake assist, stability control and hill hold assist as well.
Ford EcoSport Engine & Performance
The biggest change is the all-new 1.5-litre Dragon engine. This is a three-cylinder engine that churns about 121bhp of power, 150Nm of torque and comes with a six-speed automatic transmission. A regular automatic replaces the DCT unit. The diesel engine is unchanged.
The 1.5-litre Dragon petrol engine on the Ford Ecosport 2018 is a good new engine. This new engine is light weight as it has an aluminium block which is light in weight. The timing belt comes in an oil bath for reduced wear and tear and an integrated exhaust manifold is also there. The throttle response is better and there is an improvement in its mileage by 7%. The NVH levels will be lower too. The new petrol engine churns out 121bhp of power at 6,500rpm and 150Nm of maximum torque at 4,500rpm. This is about 13bhp and 10Nm more than the earlier petrol engine. This engine is offered with a five-speed manual and six-speed DCT. For more info 0n ford Ecosport check planetm.co.in
The 1.5-litre diesel engine has 99bhp of power and 210Nm of maximum torque. This engine remains the same as earlier. Ford has now discontinued the 1.0-litre Ecoboost engine. The mileage of the petrol is about 12km/l and 11km/l, for the manual and auto respectively, in the city. On the highway it returns 16km/l and 17km/l. The diesel returns about 15km/l in the city and close to 18km/l on the highway. The diesel mileage remains similar.
Ford EcoSport Ride & Handling
Contrary to speculations Ford hasn’t made any change to the suspension setup or the dynamics of the EcoSport S. Ford say that further stiffening of the setup would just make the ride quality quite unbearable on our roads. And we can’t blame them as we did quite like the new setup of the 2017 update. It’s still a firm setup but the crashiness from the pre-facelift car has disappeared. Only really sharp bumps like level changes and rumblers make their presence felt in the cabin. We appreciated the quiet cabin of the new EcoSport and with the quiet EcoBoost it’s even quieter while cruising.
The nicely weighted steering is quite responsive around town but, as can be expected, the tall boy design exhibits some body roll during quick lane changes at highway speeds. This got us thinking – what if Ford decided to drop the ride height, add some sticky tyres instead of the Bridgestone Ecopia 205/50 R17s, and gave us an RS version?
Ford EcoSport Safety & Security
Ford offers two safety airbags for the driver and front passenger and ABS with EBD (electronic brake-force distribution) as standard across all the variants. Other standard features include a seat belt warning system and child seat anchor point. The fully-loaded Titanium Plus gets six airbags, Brake Assist, ESP (Electronic Stability Programme), Hill Hold Control and Traction Control System. It even gets rear parking sensors and a camera.

Ford EcoSport Verdict
Ford is offering the S variant on both petrol and diesel models and both are priced at a premium of Rs 85,000 over the Titanium+. In the diesel version, this difference would get you only extra features like the HID headlamps and the sunroof. However, the petrol, in addition to these, also gets you an upgrade to the EcoBoost engine and the six-speed manual gearbox. Add to that the sporty styling and the fantastic driving dynamics, and the EcoSport S makes for a cracking value proposition.Tags: Ford
